1990s research... Spice Girls
The spice girls are one of the biggest girl groups ever. I used to have one of their tapes and I loved listening to it. Their nicknames were scary, posh, ginger, sporty and baby spice. They matched these with their own unique look and hairstyle, which many girls copied.
Geri Halliwell is famous for wearing the iconic symbol of a union jack for various outfits, making it a very popular and fashionable image in the 90s.
They show a typical 90s style of crop tops and bare midriffs. Their hair styles were well known for each of them, as they were part of their identity in the group.

1990s research... Clueless
So basically, when I got given the 90s to research for my character design I wasn't really that inspired. I much prefer older decades and styles, and didn't think I would find anything that would interest me for this project..
Then I realised this film would be perfect to look at.
Clueless
Set in a Beverly Hills high school in 1995, this film is full of fashion ideas.
The style of Cher the main character is 'rich girl prep'.
Patterned mini skirts, knee high socks, pleats, blazers... these were part of Cher's wardrobe. Mona May, the costume designer for Clueless, used all these items that were popular with wealthy 90s teenagers who were wearing the preppy style, and had fun making it tastless and tacky.
The grunge look. Baggy, oversized clothing. Associated with skaters, although people who didnt skate adopted this style too.
